What is Osteopathy ?

Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person’s muscles and joints. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together. (NHS) 

What conditions can osteopathy treat?

Osteopathy can treat a wide range of conditions, including:

1. Back pain and sciatica
2. Neck pain and headaches
3. Joint and muscle pain, including arthritis, tendonitis, sprains, tears, range of movement etc.
4. Sports injuries such as Knee ligament injuries, ankle sprains, shoulder dislocations, hip pain etc. 
5. Postural problems
6. Temporomandibular joint dysfuntions (Jaw pains) 
7. Recovery from surgery or injury
8. Rehabilitation after a stroke or accident.
9. Frozen shoulder or any shoulder pain and dysfunction. 
10. Sinuses congestion. 

However, it is important to note that osteopathy is not a substitute for medical treatment and should be used in conjunction with proper medical care.

Can people of all ages use osteopathy?

People of all ages can use Osteopathy however, in this clinic we will not be accepting babies or children aged under 13 years old. 

How long does an osteopathy treatment session last?

An initial consultation usually lasts from 45min to 1hour. 

Depending on the amount of areas that require treatment, the follow-ups can be from 30min to 1hour. 

Is osteopathy covered by health insurance or the NHS in the UK?

Although Osteopaths have been recongnosided as Allied Healthcare Profesionnals, Osteopathy is not covered by NHS.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with osteopathy?

Like any medical treatment, there are possible side effects to an Osteopathic treatment such as muscle soreness, tiredness or bruises. 

The possibility of side effects will be disscussed with you during the appointment and your verbal consent will be requirred in order to perform the treatments. 

 

Can osteopathy be used alongside other medical treatments?

Osteopathy is a non-invasive and very safe therapy that uses hands-on manipulation to alleviate aches and pains. 

In some rare cases that we call RED FLAGS, the Osteopath will not be able to perform any treatment. 

For example: 

– Cancer without a discharge letter from your medical doctor

– 1st Trimester of pregnancy 

– Bone fracture (not able to work on it) 

– Extreme fever 

– Infectious diseases 

– Being under the influence of Alcohol or drugs 

How many osteopathy sessions will I need to see results?

After the consultation and assessment, with the help of the  National Institute of Care and Excellence guidelines, your Osteopath will be able to give you a prognosis. 

For instance, most common cases of back pain, you will need an average of 3 to 5 sessions to start feeling better.
